About My Blog

Welcome to 500 Days of Style! After a recent trip to my fashion capital of the world, Paris, I decided to amp up my style, and chronicle it on this blog!
Hope you enjoy it, and it inspires you to be super stylish (even on a low budget, like me!)

MBFW

After literally 7 hours of work, it's done! Please enjoy my coverage of NYFW Spring 2013.  All info and pictures come from here, unless otherwise stated. Go there if you want to see more from each designer. Keep in mind that the pictures I pulled out, unless otherwise stated, are the ones I liked or those that caught my eye in a good way. My favorites are larger than the others.

Academy of Art University: At MBFW recent graduates of the Academy of Art University have their collections premiered. It’s an “incredible opportunity” to debut their collections at such a well-known show. For this show (Spring 2013), there were eight women’s wear collections.
I would totally wear this if I had the chance!
This reminds me of the Joy Division album cover.
I love the neon suit trend!

I don’t, however, love the fur.
This is an okay balance of both:

So futuristic! It reminds me of the Jetsons, in a good way.
 So pretty and so mod.
Pockets?! Awesome.
I can’t tell if I love or hate the trend with faces superimposed on clothing. You decide for yourself.

Angel Sanchez: It says in his biography that his “first love was architecture,” and this is definitely reflected in the geometric designs of his work.  I’ve never heard of him before, but I am in love with his works. This is his first MBFW.

Anna Sui: mixes of romantic nostalgia and rock-and-roll glam.

What have you done to Karlie?!

Arise Magazine Presents: African Icons: The magazine, ARISE partnered with MBFW to premiere African fashion designers and show their collections. They actually have their own fashion week (AMFW), ARISE Magazine Fashion Week. This MBFW 2012, their “African Icons” are: Ozwald Boateng OBE, Gavin Rajah, Tiffany Amber, Tsemaye Binitie, and Maki-Oh. My favorite thing about these collections are the bright colors.

PERFECT for Prom? I think so.

If you didn’t like the earlier suit, this one is actually perfect for Prom. Sure to impress!
As you can tell, I’m in love with the ARISE showcase designers this season.

B Michael America:  incorporating "cool, sensational color with elegance and emotion with design."

Badgley Mischka: For obvious reasons, Mark Badgley and James Mischka have been dubbed by Vogue Magazine as one of the “Top 10 American Designers.” They’re popular for their glamorous and wearable evening wear and accessories. You can be sure you’ll see a red-carpet celebrity in one of their designs very soon. Actually, I could definitely see Blake Lively in the first one.

This shirt is stellar, especially with a bandeau and high waisted skirt underneath.

BESPOKEN: New to the fashion scene, BESPOKEN designs menswear. Their designs are pretty plain, save their stellar use of yellow.

Betsey Johnson: Betsey has left the scene of fashion, but with such amazing pieces I feel it would be wrong not to include her. Here are some of her looks from last year’s NYFW. Her runway shoes are notoriously fun

I would definitely wear this (without the gloves of course, those are so four seasons ago).

Bibhu Mohapatra: after growing up in India and working for J. Mendel under Gilles Mendel, Bibhu opened his own label in 2009.

Brandon Sun: a designer from Parsons School of Design. Launched his first solo collection of luxury fur accessories in February of 2011.

I like these dresses much better than his last season's fur collection:
 Blech.

Calvin Klein Collection: Iconic underwear.

Candela: the designer Gabriele Perezutti has deep roots in her Uruguayan upbringing, which is beautifully incorporated into her pieces. She produces both RTW (unsure of what this means? Check the GLOSSARY!) and shoes.

Check out that hair!

Carlos Miele: a Brazilian designer who incorporates his Brazilian roots into his clothing. He has been showing internationally since 2001.

Carmen Marc Valvo: one of 7th Avenue’s “most steadfast independent brands.” His eveningwear is a stable at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and other stores nationally and internationally. His goal is to create RTW pieces and not focus on a traditionally designer “shock value.”

Carolina Herrera: one of the more recognized designers, Carolina Herrera was named CDFA’s “Womenswear Designer of the Year” in 2004. She says: “With my clothing and fragrances I believe that it is best to be realistic, but to always mix a bit of fantasy with reality. It’s the same with life, really.”

Caesar Galindo Collection: One of Caesar Galindo's lines. CZAR by Caesar Galindo can be seen later in this post.

Chado Ralph Rucci: Ralph Rucci has been in the fashion industry for over thirty years, creating and hand=making all his items in his NYC work rooms.
This was my favorite piece. I wasn’t really in love with his collection. But I love how dainty and ballerina-esque this outfit is.

Chadwick Bell: Bell debuted his spring 2009 collection during NYFW. He blends romantic and utilitarian, tailoring and ease, and strength and vulnerability.
This was another collection I wasn’t so thrilled about.

Charlotte Ronson: born in London and raised in New York, Ronson has become one of the “most sought after American womenswear designers.”

I wasn’t blown away by this Spring 2013 collection.

Chris Benz: Benz grew up in Seatlle and presented his first RTW collection during NYFW in 2007. He calls the “Chris Benz girl” an “ageless sophisticate, a reckless preppy who desires nothing more than to keep dancing.” I see it!

I’d die to get my hands on this sweater.

Christopher Esber: the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award Winner, Esber designs fashions in the style of a modern take of feminine dressing and hails from Australia.

I was unimpressed with his collection.

Clover Canyon: This is the first MBFW for this California-inspired line.

Concept Korea: a label with a mix of five designers; one, Lie Sang Bong, is known as Seoul's "Best Designer of the Year" in 1993 and "Korean McQueen." Each designer's collection has a very different feel, which is extremely apparent in the show.

I'd die for this jacket.
And this dress:

All of the collections have their own special flair, although I like the colorful one the best.

Custo Barcelona: two brothers created Custo Barcelona in the early 80s and the label is known for their printed tops that began the line.

I could see myself falling in love with any guy who wore these pants and jacket.

I need that suit. I yearn for it. It's probably at least a thousand dollars though... :(

CZAR by Cesar Galindo: Cesar began fashion by designing corsets and period costumes for the Miami City Ballet and then for the Houston Grand Opera. CZAR by Cesar Galindo, his secondary collection, was launched in the fall of 2011.
Unfortunately, I hate the collections. It's hard even to try to pick my least favorite piece.
It's a three-way tie between these gems:

David Basso: considered one of America's premiere celebrity designers, Basso began his business in 1983 and has been recently featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Town & Country, Elle, and W.

I'm not a huge fan of fur, so I didn't love this collection as much as I should have. But I love what's under the fur! This dress is perfect for a Christmas Party (sans fur of course):

Diane von Furstenberg: the original creator of the wrap dress, Furstenberg has been a part of the fashion world since 1972. She is committed to empowering women through her fashion, philanthropy, and mentorship. On a side note, my little sister Kyra has a Diane von Furstenberg necklace that she loves.

Diesel Black Gold: Sophia Kokosalaki was born in Greece but is a young English-based designer who launched her first women's collection in 1999. She actually created the costumes for the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens!

DKNY: a well known label with a well known chief designer, Donna Karan. She says "For me, designing is an expression of who I am as a woman, with all the complications, feelings and emotions." The label's key pieces are black cashmere, leather, stretch and molded fabrics, and silhouettes that wrap around the body. Karan's "quest for the perfect jeans" resulted in DKNY's creation in 1989.

Holy haute couture! That's one of the most gorgeous and simple dresses I have seen in a very long time.

The label is also known for its bodysuits, like the one above.

Donna Karan New York: DKNY's chief designer's other label, which I like considerably less than DKNY. There are a few couple I don't mind though, like these:

E L L E R Y: Ellery is turning from the new designer to watch to the one everyone wants. She attended the acclaimed fashion school in London, Central St. Martins and worked for 4 years at Russh magazine on the creative team. This is her first MBFW.

Edun: a for-profit fashion brand launched in 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono is now under the creative director of Sharon Wauchob. Her debut collection was S/S 2011. This is the label's first MBFW.

(My favorite model! Ginta Lapina)

Elle Fashion | Next: Elle Magazine partnered with the Fashion Institute of Technology for the third Fashion Next Design Award program. The top 20 FIT student designers each designed 2-3 pieces from scratch inspired by NYC.

I love the concept of these pants!

The dress above and the dress below... so dainty and beautiful!

Emerson: the "EMERSON collection embodies the powerful and free-spirited modern woman." One thing's for sure: they get top marks for the hair!

Emilio Cavallini: a label more than 40 years old, Emilio Cavallini is known for his "superb quality, unique designs, and impeccable fit." Tights are a big part of Cavallini pieces. Unfortunately, the label no longer showcases at MBFW.

Erickson Beamon: a primarily jewelry and eyewear label.

Falguni and Shane Peacock: a label with unique and unusual styling as well as attention to detail. Signature use of feathers, sequence, and prints.

I didn't adore this collection, but the intricacy is something to be in awe of.

Fashion Law Institute: the world's first center "dedicated to law and the business of fashion." This is their first MBFW.

Fotini: a brand that "showcases ultra-feminine, flirty, and current collections." I'm obsessed.

Holmes & Yang: a luxury designer collection that was launched in 2009.

J. Mendel: a fifth generation company focused on the founding principles of luxury, quality, and style.

J. Crew: J. Crew's first catalog was in 1983 and their Madewell store was opened in 2006. I just love how wearable their collections are, especially the menswear!

So sharp!

This is so cute for a business-casual event.

Jenny Packham: famous for partywear and evening, the Jenny Packham designs have been worn by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Cameron DIaz, Rihanna, Beyonce, Keira Knightly, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and on shows like Sex and the City and Casino Royale.

Jill Stuart: the collection began in 1993 with accessories. Stuart actually created the fashion backpack, cocktail mini dresses, and plaid kilt skirts. In my opinion, her Spring 2013 collection wasn't totally mindblowing.

Joanna Mastroianni: clothing for modern, fashion forward women who enjoy sophistication, elegance, and timeless beauty. I hated her Spring 2013 collection.
Here are some of my least favorites:

John Bartlett: "rugged American authenticity" in menswear. He made fashion history with the first ever eco-luxe, 100% cruelty-free fall/winter menswear collection last NYFW.

Ohm!

Joseph Abboud: fancy-shmancy menswear.

Joy Cioci: launched with Fall 2011 at MBFW. "Sexy, romantic and influential...meticulous designs to provide a versatile collection."

And I'm almost positive this is our very own Cam Corrigan! Congrats Cameron:)

KAELEN: after working at MTV, Jenni Kayne, and Stella McCartney, Kaelen Haworth launched her brand KAELEN in 2010.
I would totally wear this to school.

I love this take on the LBD.

One of the great things about this collection is that one could actually wear it right off the runway.

Katya Leonovich: hailing from Moscow, Katya’s bridal collection was debuted at NYFW S/S 2011.

Lacoste: the designer, Felipe Oliveira Baptista was born in Portugal and launched his solo line in 2003. He was appointed the creative director of Lacoste in 2010.

(One of my favorite male models, Yuri Pleskun.)

Lela Rose: Lela Rose created her signature collection in 1998. Her RTW apparel is sold in over 75 specialty stores worldwide.  The collection has expanded to include wedding and bridesmaid apparel as well as footwear. I didn't love this collection, but I adore many of her previous pieces.

Mara Hoffman: the Mara Hoffman line encompasses everything from dresses, leggings, blouses, coats, sweaters, and scarves to swimwear. The current collection focuses on silk prints.  Hoffman’s clothes have been worn by Blake Lively, Estelle, Halle Berry, Megan Fox, Rihanna, Katy Perry, JLo, and Kim Kardashian, to name a few.
This collection was Hawaii-inspired, and I loved it!

Absolutely enamored with this dress.

Marimekko: This collection was a bit weird, and half of the models were in their 60s!

Marissa Webb: this is the first MBFW for the Marissa Web Label, which combines feminine aspects and masculinity. I am obsessed with this collection.

This is the perfect outfit.

If only this could be my grad dress...
Or this one:

A modern Jacki O!

Mark McNairy: Rugged mens and womenswear.

Marlon Gobel: Menswear and unique suits.

Mathieu Mirano: Mathieu’s debut collection launched in 2011 and is known for his special occasion gowns.

I think its of vital importance to note how absolutely adorable the designer Mathieu is:

Michael Kors: After forming in 1981, the Michael Kors collection has grown to included sportswear, accessories, women’s RTW and swimwear, eyewear, and fragrances. Kors has been a judge on “Project Runway” since 2004.

Karlie Kloss again!

Milly by Michelle Smith: a collection that began in 2001, Milly is known for its “vibrant prints and colors, exquisite fabrics and sharp attention-to-detail.” The collection has expanded beyond RTW, into handbags, leather goods, swimwear, and the Milly Minis childrenswear collection.

MM6 Maison Martin Margiela: a line that includes garments, shoes, and accessories, this casual wear made its debut this MBFW.

Monika Chiang: Chiang’s collection debuted in the fall of 2011 and includes apparel, handbags, shoes, and jewelry. The collection “evokes modern glamour steeped in an elegant nonchalance.”

Monique Lhuillier: Lhuillier grew up in the Philippines and debuted her first bridal collection in 1996.

Naeem Khan: a line committed to fitting women in refined elegance, Khan’s line is influenced by his childhood in India and is worn by many, including Beyonce, Penelope Cruz, Lea Michele, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, Florence Welch, Eva Longoria, and Michelle Obama. His clothes were also seen in Sex in the City and Dreamgirls.  The Naeem Khan line was launched in 2003.

Nanette Lepore: Lepore is known for her “bold colors, evocative prints and signature silhouettes.” Her designs are supported by Michelle Obama, Nicki Minaj, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Arianna Huffington, Carly Rae Jepson, Abigail Breslin, and Kristin Chenoweth.

Nicholas K: a NYC based design company founded by siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz.  The line was founded in 2003 and offers RTW for women.
I didn't like this collection. Everyone looked homeless.

Nicole Miller: Miller’s Signature, Collection, and Studio apparel and accessories are available at 1,200 fine specialty stores world wide. She is known for element of whimsy and surprise.

Nina Skarra: Nina Skarra is from Norway and her collections combine the "purity of Scandinavian design" with classic elements. This is her first MBFW.

Noon by Noor: A two-woman label, the designs have roots in Bahrain (Noor's home) and England (Haya's home). This is their first MBFW.

Norisol Ferrari: Ferrari was born in NY and is of Venezuelan descent. Her first RTW collection was launched in 2010.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find even one piece I like that she's made.

Osklen: combining NY and Brazil, the men and women's collection includes RTW, footwear, accessories, and swimwear. It is the leading Brazilian luxury fashion brand.

Which do you like better? The black top or white? I can't decide.

Pamella Roland: designs for confident women who want to feel polished, sensual, and feminine. The line launched in2002.

Parkchoonmoo: hailing from Korea, Choonmoo Park launched her first label DEMOO in 1988. She participated in Concept Korea during 2010 NYFW.
This is another collection I can't stand. Sorry Choonmoo.

Rachel Zoe: one of the most influential people in fashion, Rachel Zoe even has her own show, The Rachel Zoe Project. She is the one who said "Style is what one creates...glamour is a state of mind." I think she should stick to styling and not designing.

Rafael Cennamo: after the label launched in 2006, it has become known for elegant couture designs in eveningwear.  Cennamo draws inspiration from his Italian-Venezuelan family and his brother's modeling agency. He also launched a bridal collection in 2010. Some who have worn his designs include Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria, and Gwen Stefani.

Ralph Lauren: One of the most influential fashion designers ever.  A fashion icon whose label has been around for 40 years. Note: It's pronounced Lauren as in a girl's first name.

Rebecca Minkoff: "playful and subtly edgy designs" launched in 2001. Her clothing line was dropped in 2005 when Minkoff switched over to accessories.

I love the concept of these pants!

Reem Acra: RTW and bridal collections that launched in 1997.

Richard Chai: after working as an assistant designer at Armani Exchange, a designer for DKNY, and the Design Director for Marc Jacobs, Chai established his own company in 2004. He works with both womenswear and menswear.

Ruffian: "In each collection, culture clashes with counter culture, classic with cutting edge, punk with princess. Ruffian smashes archetypes and rebuilds them slightly askew." One of the founders published an autobiographical novel about the brand, Ruffian:Inside Out
I didn't like any of the pieces in their Spring 2013 collection. I do, however, love that all the models wear Chucks.

Son Jung Wan: After being born and Raised in Korea, Son Jung Wan's Korean designer label has grown to one of the largest in the country.

Sure, the outfit's nice, but I am just so distracted by his gorgeous bone structure...

Wow! Look at the back of this dress in the background of another great outfit:
I love the braids!

Supima: America's luxury cotton founded in 1954.  The annual Supima Design Competition gives runway exposure to new designers. Eight designers compete, and the winner is announced at the end of the show and given $10,000!
Note: the photos for this runway show are from a separate source, seen here

Look at the gorgeous detailing!

I am in love with this dress... both the front and back are stunning.

Tadashi Shoji: was born and raised in Sendai, Japan and launched his self-named collection in 1982.

This cut seems to be really popular this year.

The Art Institute of New York City: leading art institute. Showcasing students' work.
There were some pieces I liked:

Both this one and the one below have green lining! I love it.

But some really tanked...

Yup, that's a guy. And so is this:

Timo Weiland: Launched in 2009 as a collection of neckwear, the brand expanded to include clothing for men and women.

Todd Snyder: this is his first MBFW. Superb at picking attractive male models to showcase his clothing.

Hello.

Hey.

Tommy Hilfiger: iconic for the last 25 years. Womenswear and menswear, but for this Spring 2013 collection, just menswear. He produces a very recognizable label.

Omg hi.

My favorite part of covering fashion besides the clothing itself is the male models... Love this assignment.

Tory Burch: launched in 2004 as a mesh of RTW, handbags, shoes, and jewelry.  Tory Burch holds a soft-spot in my heart because the shoes I wore at my Bat Mitzvah were of the label.

Tracy Reese: Reese launched her first collection in 1998, which was full of feminine, polished pieces. Celebs who wear her label include Beyonce, Taylor Swifty, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Emma Roberts, Leighton Meester, Vanessa Hudgens, Katy Perry, Tina Fey, and Kim Kardashian to name a few.

Venexiana: has been around since 2003. The lead designer, Kati Stern is not only a designer, she is also an architect, pianist, and flamenco dancer.

Vera Wang: The goddess of dresses. Her bridal gowns are to die for.

Vivienne Tam: After living in China, Hong Kong, and New York, Tam debuted her line in 1994.

Vlov-QingQing Wu: "fashion-forward apparel for middle-class Chinese men."

W118 by Walter Baker: Walter has dressed many celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Katy Perry, and Rihanna.

Whitney Eve: Whitney Port's collection.

Y-3: Yohji Yamamoto's design combines aesthetics and Japanese tailoring.

Zac Posen: A god among designers. This collection fell really short of expectation however.

Zang Toi: after leaving Malaysia, Zang Toi studied in New York before opening his atelier in 1989.

Cam Corrigan again?! Seriously, congrats.

(NOTE: David Tlale, Farah Angsana, Juicy Couture, Kate Wilkoff, L.A.M.B., Levis, Lorena Sarbu, Narciso Rodriguez, Nomia, Porter Grey, Ports 1961, Prete & Bruno, Project Runway, Rebecca Taylor, Rochambeau, Suzanne Rae, Tibi, Vantan Tokyo, Yoehlee, had collections at MBFW but are excluded from this list because no pictures are available, or have been in previous MBFWs and weren't in this one.)

For Jason Wu, Chloé, Hervé Léger by BCBGMaxAzria, and Peter Som go to this post.
